The James Birnie Award for Craft Excellence 2008 Click to nominate

This award is now in its ninth year, initiated by former President of Scottish Building Federation, James Birnie MBE. This tribute serves to demonstrate and reward the significant skills acquired by dedicated and talented apprentices within the construction industry.

Jim served his time as an apprentice Joiner with Alexander Hall, Aberdeen and progressed to become Managing Director of Hall & Tawse Limited. He was honoured with the MBE in 1999 for his services to working conditions for the industry as a whole.

Apprentice of the Year 2007

Mark Lynch

Carpentry & Joinery apprentice Mark Lynch from  City Building (Glasgow) LLP being presented with The James Birnie Award for Craft Excellence 2007 by James Birnie MBE.

In addition to being a runner up in the James Birnie award 2006, he was selected to attend the Queens Garden Party in July last year as a reward for his commitment to his apprenticeship. Mark was also selected to represent Scottish apprentices from across the construction industry as the Scottish apprentice delegate at the UCATT (Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians) bi-annual National Delegate Conference in Torquay.  He achieved an SVQ Level 3 and Advanced Craft qualification in Carpentry and Joinery and is now in his second year of a Construction Management HNC.

Adult Apprentice of the Year 2007

Murray Smith

Murray Smith of Bancon Group, Banchory, a Carpentry and Joinery Apprentice, was presented the Adult Apprentice of the Year Award.

Murray joined the Bancon Group four year’s ago after a career in the Merchant Navy. Since 1975 the Bancon Group has steadily developed into a formidable group with interests in construction, property maintenance manufacturing, retailing and property development.

Special Recognition Award 2007

Stephen Millar

Stephen Millar, another City Building (Glasgow) LLP employee and wood machinist, scooped this year’s Special Recognition Award. City Building (Glasgow) LLP was formed in 2006, evolving from the former Building Services Department of Glasgow City Council. Its new status, operating as an autonomous company and with its own Board and Managing Director, enables the organisation to deliver quality construction services across the public and private sectors.
